Zawp Logo - Zorrotzaurre Art Working Progress

Since the start of the term by the request of the International residencies of ZAWP, we have received numerous requests for various disciplines, but only 4 of the projects have been selected to be carried out during the year of 2016 and early 2017.

  • “Reimagining Zorrotzaurre”:

Gabriela Aguinaga Gumuzio and Ana Carreño Fernández de Travanco

Description of the Project: The development of an audiovisual document that reflects the distinct speeches and visions about the regeneration of the Ribera de Duesto and zorrotzaurre neighbourhoods. The intention is to reflect points of conflict about the regeneration of the neighbourhood, the extension of the physical borders (at the opening of the canal), if the culture of an alternative mechanism for the recuperation of society and economy is possible without annulment of identity. It will try to encourage debate and create a connection between neighbours and citizens from Bilbao, whilst also encouraging interest and active participation in its development.

  • “Paredes para la memoria”:

Adirane Azuenaga

Description of the project: To perpetuate the memory of the Ribera de Deusto and Zorrotzaurre through an exposition of photographs of the neighbourhood and distinctive activities where the public can interact. Also to involve the people of the neighbourhood actively with their testimonials. All of this will demonstrate the beauty of the abandoned corners and walls imprinted with memories. Furthermore this will highlight the importance of the historic memories and will create a historic document before the neighbourhood is transformed and loses its essence.

  • “Parkettippiak”:

María sofià Balbontín Gallo

Description of the project: Parkettippiak is a project based on urban intervention that will generate awareness about the natural character of the península of the Ribera de Duesto, currently in its situation of environmental degradation. By means of micro interventions, the Project aims to generate temporary urban transformations that put value in the natural quality of the place. It looks to revitalise the neighbourhood through the momentary restoration of the original ecosystem in the format of small Parks or natural fragments. Parkettipiak ties disciplines of art, design, architecture and town planning with ecology, and the environment and landscape.

  • “El ojo arqueológico”:

Emilia Estrada

Whilst there is an ongoing urban transformation, the inhabitants and city users pass between ruins. In-between the past and the proposed utopia of the city that will come, “somos contemporáneos a los escombros. Convivimos con las remanencias de una ciudad que expone su historia mediante las heridas que se abren en el asfalto, mostrando las camadas de memorias en fragmentos de cemento y barro.” The proposal consists of a simulation of archaeological studies in spaces of transformation, really emphasizing the poetic character of the archeological act, and the construction of a historical narrative through the conventional indicators of a vestige. Everything works from the archaeological drawing with fieldwork, the laboratory, and the training.
